STREETS. STREETS. STREETS. THERE IS SUCH A CONFUSION, LIFE THERE IS SO INTENSE, SO DIVERSE, SO OUTLANDISH, IT RESEMBLES NOTHING KNOWN.Blaise Cendrars 1936 ( from Reyner Banham LOS ANGELES – THE ARCHITECTURE OF FOUR ECOLOGIES )
How Many Billboards? Art In Stead was a large-scale urban exhibition debuting twenty-one new works by leading contemporary artists, presented simultaneously on billboards throughout Los Angeles which went on view from Silverlake to Westwood. It has been fascinating and exciting to see them all placed in the city.
Commissioned by the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles my approach on this challenging photodocumentary is how outdooor street art is integrated in the extreme urban cityscape of los angeles by investigating the topographical context.
The exhibition was organized by MAK Center Director Kimberli Meyer, with co-curators Lisa Henry, Dr. Nizan Shaked, and Dr. Gloria Sutton, and public art consultant Sara Daleiden. The exhibition was accompanied by an overview exhibition and orientation station at the Schindler House.
