CREATING A MODERN MONUMENT
How can a listed historical cultural site, which has been an integral part of the history of the German reunification, both culturally and subculturally, be reimagined as a new museum community hub? Berlin, a dynamic and endlessly creative cultural hotspot has, in recent years, cultivated its own unique style, which has garnered global recognition as the Berlin Style. It’s not about perfection, elegance or sophistication but rather about authenticity, reduction, improvisation and minimalism. All spaces of the Fotografiska building were designed by studio aisslinger in such a way that the new design and interior interventions enrich the listed building but never attempt to compete with its imposing historical aura.The historic Tacheles art community, which has electrified Berlin and both parts of Germany with art, performance and music since the early 1990s, is set to become a new community hub in 2023, bridging the gap between the historic political subculture community and the international art and cultural scene of the present day.
